Year Without a Summer
A year without a summer
1816 is known as a year without summer due to serious climate abnormalities. Summer temperatures in Europe were the lowest in recorded history between 1766 and 2000. This has led to acute food shortages in the Northern Hemisphere.
A year without summer was an agricultural disaster. The historian John D. The post called it “the last major life crisis in the Western world.”
There was a mass famine in China. The floods destroyed much of the remaining crops. Heavy flooding was in the Yangtze Valley. At Fort Shuancheng, which is now in Heilongjiang Province, it was reported that all the fields were destroyed due to the frost. There were also reports of summer snowfall or other mixed precipitation in various places in Jiangxi and Anhoi, which are located at about 30° N latitude. Tropical-climate Taiwan, snowed in Xinzhou and Myoli, and frosted in Changhua.
In India, the late summer monsoon caused late torrential rains that have aggravated the spread of cholera from the region near the Ganges in Bengal to Moscow itself.
In Japan, which was still cautious after the cold weather-related Tenmei famine of 1782–1788, the cold damaged crops.
